Dog Hair, Yogurt & Throw Up

Ever have one of those days?
I feel like I've had one of those weeks!
We've had a bunch of people out sick at work,
making an already hectic day even more so.
I got thrown up on...
Yes, you read that right.
And then the mother of all pet peeves...
the very furry dog slept on the sofa that he's not supposed to go on.
It's dark and he's light...not a good combination.

All of that =
Me not in such a great mood. to fix this?
A glass of wine...check
Some chocolate...check
Another glass of wine...check
Some more chocolate...why not!

I think we all have comfort food and in our house
it is something we refer to as yogurt chicken.
There is something about cooking with cumin
that seems to put me at ease.
It's my "go to" spice.
I don't follow a recipe so
measurements are an approximation.

One large tub of yogurt,
Greek yogurt works the best and about a
heaping tablespoon each of cumin and garam masala.
A splash of lemon juice...
about 1/2 a lemon's worth.

Half an onion, about 5 or 6 cloves of garlic
and 2 small persian cucumbers,
quickly pulsed in the food processor.

Quick stir and you've got your marinade.

Add your chicken...
we like it best with drumsticks
but thighs or breasts work well too,
and skin on gives the best results.

Marinate in the refrigerator anywhere from 30 mins to 8 hours.
Then BBQ over a very low indirect heat until fully cooked through.
It usually takes about 45+ mins to cook.
If you cook it over too high a heat
the natural sugars from the yogurt will burn.
(Made that mistake once and it's not pretty...
all the charred skin stuck to the grill)

While it's cooking I prep some veggies...

Zucchini, and cherry tomatoes,
a little olive oil, salt and pepper and
into the grill basket they go.
They are so simple and they taste so good!

We serve it with some great pita bread from a little local
middle eastern's always so fresh and yummy!

And the kids favorite,
sticky yellow saffron rice...

Somehow after we eat food that is comforting to us,
things always seem a little better.

Aaaahhhhhh (sigh)....
I'm starting to feel the pressures of the week slipping away,
maybe just one more drumstick.

Cold Feet and Pin Cushions

So here goes with the 2nd edition of...
Tickle Me Tuesdays,
and in case you're just joining us,
you can read all about it here.

I'm not really a slipper person,
they make me feel confined.
Living in California I wear flip flops about 99% of the year,
so anything more confining than that feels constrictive.
The dilema is that I have wood floors in my house and
in the wee hours of the morning
they are a slight bit chilly on my little tooties.
Usually I would just wear a pair of fuzzy socks,
that was until I found these...

Snoozies are like having the softest cotton balls surrounding your feet.
Walking on a cloud...I absolutely love them!!
And they are machine washable...gotta love it!

What could be more pretty than perfume housed in an inkwell bottle,
topped with a pin cushion and vintage inspired pins!
Scents of grapefruit, pink peppercorns and roses.
How perfectly divine!
(Now on top of my Anthropologie wish list)

So that's what has caught my eye this week...
how about you...find anything interesting or noteworthy?
I'd love to hear about it!

You can check out more
Tickle Me Tuesdays
finds over at my bloggy friend Sarah's blog

Until next time...
Happy Tuesday!

A Bowl of Love

Do you remember as a kid when you were sick,
there was nothing better than Mom looking after you.
Lying on the couch,
tucked all warm under your blankets,
a cup of hot tea or a bowl of warm soup and...
somehow you always felt better.

Now that we're adults, we don't often get that kind of treatment anymore.
Actually for those of us that are now Moms ourselves,
it's usually us doling out the "get well" treatment
to our own kids now.

So a few weeks back, I was sick...
terrible cold, lost my voice,
I was just downright miserable...
until dinner time that was.

When a little zesting...

And some chopping...

And dicing...

A little mise en place...

Some simmering...

Turned into this...

A bowl of warm goodness,
destined to make me feel better,
especially because it was made with love by...

All while I sat relaxing all cozy in my jammies...
(except for taking a few pics)

There's nothing as good as
something homemade with love just for you!

Coffee and the Doctor

Here goes with my first edition of
Tickle Me Tuesdays!

If you missed what it's all about you can check it out here.

So this week it's been all about coffee!!!
And more coffee, and yet one more cup...
some lovely frothy milk to go with it too!

Thanks to this...

The Bonjour French Press and Milk Frother set from
We had a gift card from the holidays and this is what we decided on.
It's heaven...I feel like a barista!
The coffee is rich and smooth and the aroma that fills the kitchen...

We also got some of this to go along with it...
Delicious Italian illy coffee...
It's the smoothest coffee, a slight chocolate hint and never bitter,
one of my all time favorite coffees.

Then on to the doctor part of my week.
This has a rather bizarre start...
Chad & I enjoy watching behind the scenes kind of shows
to find out how things are made etc...

Somehow (I'm assuming we were half asleep) we saw a show for
"Doc Martin" and thinking it was a look at how the shoes are made,
we set a recording.
Big DUH!
When we went to watch the episode low and behold
 it's a British comedy that
has absolutely nothing to do with shoes!

It is a very quirky show...
as the doctor has the worst bedside manner you can imagine and
lacks any and all social skills.
You can read more about it here.
It may not be everyone's cup of tea but it
Tickles My Fancy!

So join me again next week when
Tickle Me Tuesdays returns,
 on Tuesday...of course!

Want to see some more
Tickle Me Tuesday posts...then pop by
to read some more!

Elinor Dashwood

So I know this isn't exactly food related
but it's fun...

I'm a huge Jane Austen fan and
when I saw this little quiz on
my bloggy friend
I knew I had to give it a whirl.

So here are my results...
(and one of my all time favorite Austen gals too)

Take a minute and take the quiz and
then come back and let me know who you are...
maybe we'll be kindred spirits!

Happy Weekend!

Tickle Me Tuesday

So let me start off by saying yes,
I do realize it's Wednesday today...
 My intentions were good, but...
yesterday just kind of disappeared and Ta Da...
it's Wednesday!!

My bloggy friend Sarah over at
is starting....

Tickle Me Tuesdays is a venue to share what is currently
tickling your fancy...
or I guess in this case, my fancy!

According to Sarah it could be:
That new pair of tights from Anthropologie.
A rosette necklace you saw on Etsy.
It could be some stationery found at Big Cartel.
Or in my case it might be some delicious new recipe or kitchen contraption!

Once you write your post (including pictures, of course),
go back and link up here at Yes Teacher so we can all go "window shopping".
It'll be a great way to know each other better and a fun way to find
new shops and lovely products out there!

So me... as in Meeling and The Hairy Peach are planning to participate...
sounds like fun...I love window shopping!

Sarah says the more the merrier so if you are interested in joining in too,
the rules are below
or you can also stop by Sarah's Blog
for more info.
(which might not be a bad idea since I'm not overly tech savvy)

The first "Tickle Me Tuesday" will start next week on the 18th.

1. Write a short post with anywhere from one to five items that have been tickling your fancy recently. Please include pictures and links :)

2. Make sure to link back to the party in your blog post
(you can grab the button or include a text link)

3. Come back in Sara's blog
and link up your blog post!

4. Visit some other links and HAVE FUN!

So come stop by The Hairy Peach next Tuesday
to find out what it's all about!!

In the meantime...
I'll be back a little later this week with something scrumptious!
See you soon...

Tom Jones, Snow and Pink Flamingos

On our way out of town Monday morning
we stopped to get our travel cup of coffee and
Starbucks had this cd sitting at the checkout...

Too perfect since it was to Vegas we were heading.
So armed with some good tunes...
all except for Tom Jones that is,
he just makes me giggle for some reason.

We were this white stuff!

Yes, that is snow and in case you forgot,
I live in Southern California...
it's not a sight we see too often.

I haven't stood in snow in a very long time...
and as you can tell from the bare feet in my shoes,
I wasn't really expecting it!

So singing along (except to Tom) we had a fun drive...
There is something reminiscent about a road trip,
it takes me back to being a kid, feet up on the dash,
going somewhere fun.

Chad was going for a big trade show and
I actually ended up tagging along to the show.
It was a lot of fun, except maybe for the
cereal box sized name tag they make you wear around your neck.
I mean really...does my name have to be in such
type that you can read it across a football field!

Now to the fun parts...
Our room was covered because of the convention
so we figured we'd use the money we would have spent
on the room and go out for a really nice dinner. idea of fun!

We got dressed up and of course since there
was no one to take pictures...the camera was set up on the headboard
and we ran and posed...
let's just say out of about a dozen shots this was the best one,
and we were out of breath anyways!

We were staying at Mandalay Bay and
chose a restaurant in the hotel...

Yes, that is a headless Lenin statue outside the entrance to

It's very dark and full of cozy red tones in the restaurant,
nice and quiet and the best pomegranate martinis ever!
They specialize in vodkas from all over the world
so their drink list is a menu in itself.

Let's just say though that me, 2 martinis, high heels and
slippery stone floors do not go well together.
The restroom was a little walk from our table,
and for fear of falling I did the geisha shuffle...
tiny, tiny, baby steps.
I'm sure some people had a good laugh at my expense...
I know Chad did!

Their menu is extensive, but to get a good feel for their
selections we choose to do their
Tasting Menu which is a little bit of everything.

We also added these...
warm mouthfuls of deliciousness!

Beef Pelmeni
Beef Dumplings in a Fennel Consomme with Dill Sour Cream

Their food presentation was very pretty and eye catching.

Paddlefish Caviar Crepe Purse
tied with a
Chive Ribbon

Their waitstaff was excellent.
I have never had such fantastic service.
The minute your fork was down, your plate was cleared.
They were constantly on top of things,
but in no way obtrusive or in the way.
It was a delicious meal and a lovely treat of a night out!

I'm a huge fan of flea markets, antique stores and
I especially love mid century modern furniture.
And of course who can go wrong with pink flamingos!

I had found this place online before we left and
we knew we had to take a little detour on our trip to

Bill the owner, is a cool guy and
he has a wonderful selection of treasures
all at very reasonable prices.
I loved the retro vibe from the pink walls and
 the black painted ceilings.
We had a lot of fun just wandering around.

There were a lot of cool things I would have loved
to take home with me, but
I settled on this one...actually Chad spotted it first.

The lamp is in pristine condition,
great glaze and the colors match perfectly in our den.

Bill was even kind enough to do a little lampshade swap
since we liked a shade from another lamp better.
So thanks Bill...we love our find and
next time we're in Vegas we'll be back!

So a fun little mini-break we had!
We got to spend some quality "singing" time together on the drive,
wander the trade show proudly displaying
our GIANT names to the world...
and of course eat some delicious food!

And the best part, every time I look at our new lamp,
I'll think of Tom Jones,
the snow and pink flamingos!!

A mini-break...

Forever immortalized by Bridget Jones
in her famous "Diary" movie...
the "mini-break" has become
the epitome of a romantic weekend.

Well guess what?
Chad it taking me on a mini-break!!

Well actually that's not entirely true...
He has to go to a trade show for work and I'm tagging along,
but saying I'm going on a mini-break
 sounds way more exciting!

And it all reality it does mean a couple nice dinners out,
maybe some antiquing along the way,
some alone time to talk and
 just enjoy each others company.

So enjoy your first few days of the New Year
and I'll be back later this week with a post about
our "mini-break" which hopefully will include
 some delicious finds!
