Am I Old Fashioned?

This is not a post about food.
It is actually a rant!
Not something I normally do, but I guess I went and got me a bee in my bonnet!

Last night watching prime time television with my teenage son,
we had the utter misfortune to see this commercial...
twice actually.

Have you seen it?

I was utterly disgusted.
My 14 year son was too.
I have 2 teenage boys ages 13 & 14 who use Axe products.
They like the smell, their shower gel cleans great,
their hair products work really well.

I mean, tell me, who exactly is the target audience with this commercial?
It seemed to me that it was trying to exculpate reckless behavior.
Get problem.
Sleep with a stranger you met at a big deal.
Get beat up and thrown out of a car...who cares.
Dress up like a pig and....!

All you have to do is have a shower the next morning
with some Axe shower gel
and you're good to go!!
Clean slate.

I've already written Axe and given them a piece of my mind.

But I'm curious as to what you think...
Am I old fashioned?

ugh. I thought the hangover movie was funny - but I'm not loving the aftermath. What the heck is wrong with our culture that it glorifies drunken nights with dangerous and STUPID consequences!!??

I don't think you're old fashioned. I think it's people like us who are appalled by this kind of commercial, that will HOPEFULLY keep the next generation from being a band of wild monkeys. I'm glad your boys thought it was distasteful - I hope my daughters will be smart, too, when they are teens!!

I'm with you on this one Meeling!
I haven't seen the commercial on TV but we may not get the same ones up here in Canada.
Kudos to you for writing Axe and letting your views be known.
Society as a whole have become too complacent and morality has gone out the window.

This is the first I've seen of that commercial and it is appalling. Hopefully Axe will pull it quickly as the message it sends to our young men is not a positive nor flattering one.

I'm also upset that the broadcast media have returned to airing hard liquor commercials. And, just like years ago, these commercials convey the idea that drinking is fun, cool and the "sociable" thing to do, very reminiscent of the old cigarette commercials. So great, we'll soon be seeing a whole new generation of alcoholics, future members for AA !!! :(

It's funny that you posted this because I do recall seeing this ad before, and remember being left with one eyebrow raised at the end.

I suppose I get that they were going for some sort of tongue in cheek effect. But unfortunately, with their bizarre and distasteful choice of subject matter, they completely missed that mark and jumped from what was suppose to be wry innuendo to being flat out uncomfortable. Certainly not the effect you want to have on your market.

Kudos to your young son for having the maturity to recognize the difference. And kudos to you for giving them the feedback they deserve.

I don't think you're old fashioned at all. I remember watching this with my mouth open. We spend so much time teaching our children to make good choices and to have self respect and then a 30 second commercial comes along and challenges that in every way. It's good to know that your son found it disgusting.

I don't think your old fashioned, I have a problem with all the Axe commercials. It's kind of sad that they have to resort to this type of behavior to sell things.

This commercial is a disgrace! I don't think you are old fashioned at all.

You are not at all old-fashioned, simply someone with good taste.

First time I've seen this. I would say I am old fashioned too.
I would say your son is mature beyond his years.

wow. what can I say? I really don't know who their target audience is since obviously boys your sons' ages will be using their products. Good for you for sending them your views on this - it's hard enough to teach your kids right and wrong without having mixed messages coming from advertisers. They should be ashamed of themselves.

No it's awful - there are sooo many awful commercials- like cialis and viagra and my now eight year old asking me what those are for UGH!!! Nevermind the actual programming .

No, it's not old fashioned at all! I'm glad you stood up for what is RIGHT! There's no need to set that kind of example for boys (young and old). I hope they pull it off the air!

Not at all appropriate for the huge part of their audience that are young men and teenagers. I think it's clearly made to appeal to college aged and 20-somethings though and they just went a few steps to far..certainly enough to warrant anger and offense at it's absurdity from folks who'd been wrongly exposed to it on primtime television which is just ignorance on their part. And really...the farm animals thing? That's just so far in left field, I can't imagine how they thought it was appropriate for a tv spot for a product used by teens and pre-teens! That's just disgusting—go you for writing that letter!!!
